Colossians 2:6-8
Brothers and sisters:
As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, walk in him,
rooted in him and built upon him
and established in the faith as you were taught,
abounding in thanksgiving.
See to it that no one captivate you with an empty, seductive philosophy
according to the tradition of men,
according to the elemental powers of the world
and not according to Christ.
This passage is frequently used as ammunition against the Catholic church and her “traditions.” Here, Paul is condemning traditions that are not rooted in Christ and Apostolic tradition.
The teachings and traditions of the Catholic faith have been given by Christ through the Holy Spirit working through wise leaders, some of them having been taught directly by Christ or his apostles. For over 2000 years the Church has held to the apostle’s teachings and has protected Christianity from heresies that would have wrecked the church as soon as Christ ascended. It is because faithful Christians have held to the traditions taught to them by the apostles and their successors that we see the Church alive and well today. Before the Bible was compiled, it was oral tradition and the early church fathers who led the faithful.
If it weren’t for tradition and doctrine of our faith, terms such as “the Trinity” wouldn’t be around, which all Christians uphold as a truth.
We need tradition, just as it says in 2 Thessalonians "...hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter.”
