"Gird your loins and light your lamps and be like servants who await their master's return from a wedding, ready to open immediately when he comes and knocks. Blessed are those servants whom the master finds vigilant on his arrival."
Luke 12:35-37

This passage kind of cracks me up because the whole concept of girding your loins seems like such an elusive thing to me. We hear this language all the time in scripture, but in the 21st century, does anyone really understand what girding your loins means? I've struggled to understand it, but what I'm gathering is, as I see this imagery of girding your loins, all throughout scripture, it's this concept of being ready for action. When the time comes will you be ready? When a time of need arises, will you be ready?

Just a really simple example, I've heard multiple people tell me that they usually try to keep at least one dollar bill in their wallet or pocket in case they encounter a homeless person in need. I think that that's a really neat idea. As someone that never has cash, that's just one example of ways to gird your loins, to be ready for action in moment of need, in the moment where action is needed. Are we ready to serve the Lord when He calls upon us? When He comes, are we ready?

Lord, thank you for this day, and we ask you to give us the willpower, the discipline to be ready, to be mindful of your call, to not shut you out of a sense of needing comfort. Lord, you did not make us for comfort. You made us for greatness. Help us to be great. We love you, Lord, and we pray all this in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
